Barn Construction Specifications


We now offer three different styles of barn construction, regular post-frame with metal or wood siding, oak-framed barns with wood siding only and regular stud-frame barns.  Only foundation and framing is different on these barns,  the rest is the same.
 

Framing for Post-Frame Barn Construction:
Framing: 3-ply, or 4-ply glue-laminated posts, 2"x8" p.t. skirt boards, 2"x4" girts 24" o.c., double 2"x12" MSR headers, your choice of siding & roofing.  Note: All of our barns are built with overhangs on gables & eaves

 

 

Stud Framing Construction:

Framing: We use only 2x6 studs when doing stud framing.  We can space them either 16"o.c. or 24" o.c.

 


Framing and Foundation for Oak-framed Barns.
Foundation:
Concrete piers (18" or 24" dia. x 36" or 42" deep) under each barn corner & partition corner

(# 3,500 concrete mix).

Framing: 6"x6" pressure treated southern yellow pine sills under each wall & partition, anchored to concrete piers using 4 1/2"x5"x3 1/2" thick angle plates with two 1/2" x 4 1/2" anchor bolts and two 4" lags.  Rough cut oak framing & braces (timber frame style)  - 4"x6" rough-cut oak posts  with 2"x4" oak girts & braces. 1"x10" white pine board & batten siding (vertical).


Other Construction Specifications:
First Floor: Sizes and number of stalls, tack rooms, wash stalls, aisle way, etc. specified by customer.  Standard wall height - 10'.  Clearance - 9' (from floor to bottom of floor joists) if hayloft floor is used.  Higher walls are available.

Stalls: Each stall comes standard with 1"x8"x4' high oak kickboards (2"x8" yellow pine T&G kickboards are optional), double between stalls with 32" high steel grill on top (powder coated black).  One 4'x7' sliding door (with matching grill) in each stall. Stall fronts come with #1 2"x8" T&G southern yellow pine planks with 32" powder coated steel grill inserts. One 8-lite window with heavy duty window grill is standard in the back of each stall (4'x7' Dutch door is optional).

Tack Room/Storage Room:  Comes with wooden floor (2"x6" pressure treated floor joists 12" o.c. under 3/4" T&G plywood decking).  One 36" entrance door into the aisle way and one 36" door to outside.  Stairway for hayloft is usually placed in the tack room.

Wash Stall: Open into aisle way, walls lined with p.t. #1 2"x6" vertical T&G boards.  Concrete slab with center drain is optional.

Aisle Way: Comes standard with two double sliding doors (one in each end of aisle way).  Width of the aisle way is specified by customer.  Optional concrete slab is "broom-finished".

Loft: Comes standard with 2"x10" #2 SPF floor joists 16" o.c. and 3/4" T&G plywood decking.

Roof: Comes standard with 2"x10" spruce ridge pole, 2"x 8" spruce rafters 16" o.c. supported with double 2"x10" spruce headers (knee walls), 4"x6" yellow pine posts spaced accordingly and with 2"x4" wind braces.  2"x6" collar ties are spaced 32' o.c.  On open shells (without stalls) or garages, if customer does not need loft, trusses (24" o.c. for shingle roof or 48" o.c. for metal roof) may be used instead of rafters.

Wall Headers: #1 2x12 Yellow Pine or LVL headres (depending on the span of supporting posts)

Roofing: For roofs with shingles 7/16" O.S.B. (standard) or 1/2" plywood (optional) roof decking, 15 lbs felt paper and 30 year architectural shingles are used.  For metal roofs 2"x4" lath 24" o.c. and double-bubble insulation is used under metal.

Lean-to: Open type lean-to with 6"x6" pressure treated posts, 2"x8" spruce rafters (16" o.c.) supported by double 2"x10" spruce headers, 4"x4" yellow pine knee walls and wind braces.  Roofing is the same as barn's roofing.
